2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival: TRY HARDER!

The 2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 15th at the PROXY Walk-in Theater with:

TRY HARDER!

Directed by Debbie Lum, 2021 [not-rated]

A special Q+A featuring director Debbie Lum and additional crew will follow the screening!

“But underneath the goofiness and gallows humor, there is a darker point being made about the impossible cycle of heightened expectations, cultural stereotyping and ever-shrinking admissions quotas for top-flight colleges. The racial profile of the high-performance Lowell is not a coincidence, but nor is it an uncomplicated advantage for any attendee, Asian or otherwise.”

– Jessica Kiang, Variety

TRY HARDER! is a Sundance selected doc that focuses on five students – four seniors and one junior – attending Lowell High School. The students, all high-achieving, struggle to feel competent in the elite school as they apply for college. The film treats each of its subjects with immense empathy, allowing the students to open themselves up to the audience in their process of discovering their authentic selves.

Presented by HERE FOR NOW, the FREE, Friday evening film screenings begin at dusk with ‘doors’ opening at 6:00 pm. Film begins at sundown around 7:30PM.

Come early to claim a good spot, enjoy an ice-cold beer from Fort Point Beer Company (all proceeds support outdoor cinema at PROXY!) and delicious food from the Al Carajo food trucks!

Consistent with SFDPH Guidelines, no masks or distancing will be required for all vaccinated attendees. All PROXY staff will be wearing masks when interacting with the audience.
